Landscapes appeal to me most and fit my background as a retired geologist and hiker. I use a variety of media, with the subject often guiding which medium will produce the desired effect – for the painting to be evocative and interesting. I'm interested in the reasons why landforms appear as they are, and in portraying aspects of their character that help convey their origins. It's challenging but nice, to explore ideas, with the help of the medium.
I have been painting since childhood, but more actively since 2004. I prefer using oils, though I also use acrylics and watercolours and I've dabbled in fresco and Oamaru stone carving.
